What Is Art Deco?
Art Deco is an interior design that became popular in the period between the two World Wars. The appearance of this style which promoted the use of bold shapes, colours and patterns awakened the desire in people to wish for a change, to wish for something new and different.
This style got its name from the Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in France where it appeared for the first time. Because it appeared in the early 20th century, this style broke the historical architectural and interior design with its boldness and modernism. Simply said, this style and movement changed the way fashion, interiors and architecture were perceived and made a drastic change that was positively accepted by many.
Key Elements
This style is characterised by its curves, geometric shapes, streamlined look and sense of symmetry. The zigzags, stepped patterns and chevrons are a key element in Art Deco and they are included in most of the designs. So, it really isn’t strange seeing these designs on tiles, mirrors, wallpapers and in artworks. Regarding the colours, this interior design is all about incorporating darker and bolder colours like deep green, navy blue and black with a touch of something brighter like red, yellow, gold and royal blue.
The style was inspired by ancient cultures, by travellers and designers in the 20’s way before the nasty Great Depression period. At that time, the wealthy ones travelled to Africa, Asia and Europe in order to learn something new while gaining ideas on new patterns and designs.
Black and white are the main minimalist palettes of Art Deco (mainly wall and floor coverings), while bolder and brighter were being used in modern times. For an added touch of glamour, this style allows the use of metals, mainly in the form of hardware. The use of mirrors is also a must within the Art Deco design since their purpose goes way beyond improving the design.
The lighting of this design is all about incorporating glass and chrome lighting with geometric shapes. You are even allowed to use chrome light switches to complement the design even more. The last key element of this design is the furniture which needs to be bolder and larger.
Art Deco Knobs
Door hardware is an important element of this style, Art Deco door knobs in particular. Said in simple words, the dazzling Art Deco door knobs are the finishing touch to the doors which have the purpose to take their look to the next level. The most authentic types are the cast brass ones with goldish colour and exceptional design and engraving. Aside from it, you can also choose from the large selection of flat, round, brass and steel knobs for indoor doors which usually feature geometric patterns.
Aside from this, you can also have a look at the wide range of more modern knobs for doors that have a simpler design and symmetry. If brass and gold aren’t your choice, modern knurled texturing and a sophisticated finish nickel. In case you’re looking for something bolder, you can always have a look at the type of knobs for a door in brass finish. For instance, you can have a look at the double-ringed knobs which are easier to hold with your hands. For a dash of glamour, choose ones in a brushed brass finish.
For a softer look, you can always opt for stainless steel knobs with simple ring details. Aside from these, you can also have a look at the knobs coming in ceramic materials which allow for being patterned and decorated with geometric designs. The best thing of all is that ceramics allows for being dyed/printed in any colour, so don’t be surprised to see knobs in royal blue and deep green colour, adorned with some interesting geometric patterns. A combination of metal and glass is also a common choice in Art Deco knobs, whereas the body is made from metal while the knob itself is from glass. Aside from their transparent nature, you can also choose from black, navy, green and some other colours.
